Work Skills
Thinking about your future career and the skills you might need may seem a long way down the road. It isn’t a decision that needs to be made now and stuck to.
However, whatever you may or may not know about your future, you can still build a set of skills that can take you into whatever career you decide. And these skills aren’t only applicable to your career, these are life skills that service you throughout your whole life.
Team Work
You will have plenty of opportunities whilst at school to develop your team work skills and these will be essential in your working life in the future. Being part of a team can be really hard but rewarding. Try to put yourself forward to take on responsibly. That doesn’t always mean you have to be the leader. Teams need time keepers, note takers, researchers – all kinds of roles. Find the one that works for you.
Resilience
Can you deal with a set back and jump straight back into the game? At work, you will have bad days and be faced with stressful situations. Dealing with these in a positive way shows resilience. You could develop your resilience in lots of ways for example playing sports or a musical instrument. Check out our page on Resilience.
Effective Communication
Being able to put across your point of view and listen to others is an essential life and work skill. Are you able to change how you communicate depending on who you are talking or writing to? It would be the same talking to your boss or a customer. Think about the words you use depending on the person in front of you. Most importantly listen to what they say back to you. Communication goes two ways!
